FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESITONS

If you’re looking to make the connection between spirituality, thought and health, here are some answers to a few frequently asked questions about Christian Science.

Why is it called Christian Science?

This is the title that Mary Baker Eddy gave to the system of spiritually-based healing she discovered. She chose “Christian” because it’s based on the teachings and healing works of Christ Jesus, and “Science” because the laws of God, when systematically applied to any situation, bring about practical results.

Christian Science is not Scientology, which was founded by L. Ron Hubbard.

Is Christian Science a system of spiritually-based health care, and a religion?
Yes. It’s a Christian religion in the sense that there is a church—the Church of Christ, Scientist—that supports the practice of Christian Science healing throughout the world.  It’s also a system of spiritually-based health care that is studied and practiced by people of all walks of life.

Who is Mary Baker Eddy?
Mary Baker Eddy (1821–1910) was an influential author, teacher, and religious leader, noted for her groundbreaking ideas about spirituality and health, which she named Christian Science. She articulated those ideas in her major work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, first published in 1875.

Are Christian Scientists free to seek medical treatment?
Yes. While many Christian Scientists have consistently found this prayer-based system of healing to be a reliable means of health care, they are free to make their own decisions and health choices.

Is Christian Science faith healing?
No, if by faith healing you mean that the result of prayer, good or bad, is the will of God. It is not God’s will for anyone to suffer or be sick. God wants each individual to live a happy, healthy life.

What do Christian Scientists mean when they talk about healing through prayer?
Prayer in Christian Science is rooted in the nature of God as good and in each individual’s relationship to God. Healing prayer, whether it relates to physical or mental well-being, is based on the understanding that God loves and cares for everyone. Every human need is met by divine Love.
